Freyja in it's home port in Siglufjörður, with the iconic mountain Hólshyrna towering behind
Originally constructed in South-Korea in 2010, and used as a service ship in the oil industry
It was purchased by the Icelandic government in April 2021, to be used as one of two main ships of the Icelandic coast guard
It was brought to it's home harbor in Siglufjörður on the 4th of November 2021
Where it resides every 2 weeks, while it's brother ship Þór is out paroling Iceland's territorial waters
But always ready to respond to a crisis, if one arises
No matter what the weather
Bearing the colors of the Icelandic flag, striped on each side of the hull
It is officially tasked with patrolling and protecting Iceland territorial waters - natural resources at sea and as a first responder of search and rescue.
Equipped with two 10 person Waterjet engine FRC light boats on each side
With a towing capacity of 210 T
A large open area in the back with good lighting
with a crane arms on each side - that sit on rails along the side of the hull for any kind of field work
Heimir Sverrisson manages the ship while it's docked and takes care of the crew
Some of the crew are always on duty
Unlike it's brother Þór - It does not have a cannon, although it will probably get one in the future
The inside of the ship is compact, but efficient.
Every door leading out bears a reminder of the importance of protective clothing
That can be found in fully stocked rooms
The engine control room
The holy trinity: Coca cola - Dewalt and Landhelgisgæslan
Operating for two weeks at a time, the value of a good kitchen can not be underestimated
And a dining room, that serves it's purpose well
The meeting room for the crew and command
With the president and the Icelandic coat of arms overseeing any proceeding
The ship has a fully functioning gym, as a good workout is still needed at sea
With a standard crew compliment of 18, every member has private quarters
The command station on the bridge
